01 The brief
A family of four in a 1990s building wanted 'more storage and a brighter feel' without moving. The flat had been renovated twice before, each time by adding partitions.
02 The constraint
The building is load-bearing masonry. Only four of the nine internal walls could legally come out, and the plumbing stack could not move more than 1.2m.
03 The decision
We spent the budget on the plan rather than the finishes. Four walls out, the kitchen relocated to the south face within the 1.2m stack tolerance, and a service balcony converted into a 3.2 sq m internal court that ventilates both bedrooms.
04 The result
Daylight now reaches all four habitable rooms from two directions. Storage rose 40% purely by making it continuous and full-height instead of freestanding. Published in AD India, February 2024.
