01 The brief
Three generations of one family in a 1940s Art Deco building — grandparents, parents, two children — sharing a single kitchen.
02 The constraint
Deco-period proportions worth keeping, and a plan where every room opened off a dark 9m central corridor.
03 The decision
The corridor became the project. We widened it to 1.6m, borrowed light through internal fanlights above every door, and set a deep sill along its length. It is now where the family actually overlaps — the rooms are for retreat.
04 The result
Original terrazzo and Deco joinery retained throughout. The client's brief for 'a second living room' was met without adding a single square foot.
