01 The brief
A design consultancy of 26 wanted a studio that supported deep individual work, having found open-plan intolerable and cellular offices isolating.
02 The constraint
A single 3,100 sq ft floor plate with windows on one face only, and a 5-month handover.
03 The decision
We replaced meeting rooms with four acoustically separated alcoves of different sizes, none bookable. Desks are unassigned but each has a 1.4m depth — nearly double the norm — so people stay put by choice rather than policy.
04 The result
Post-occupancy survey at nine months: 84% reported better focus than the previous office. Alcove utilisation runs at 71% against a typical meeting-room rate near 40%.
